Our 2009 Investments
In 2008 Woodside spent more than A$10 million on community investment programs.
Investment planned for 2009 includes the following programs (greater than A$5,000):
Art Gallery of Western Australia Woodside has committed to contributing to a special acquisition fund created by the West Australian State Government, with the goal of enhancing art and culture in our state.
Clontarf In 2009, Woodside signed a two-year agreement with Clontarf to provide positive development opportunities for Aboriginal children and youth through the establishment of a Clontarf Academy in Roebourne. The Roebourne Clontarf Academy seeks to improve the education, life skills and employment prospects of young Indigenous men by using football to engage these men with school education.
Conservation Volunteers Australia Woodside employees are provided with one day of paid volunteering leave each year and this partnership is aimed at increasing volunteering contribution within the company. C.V.A. was commissioned to provide group volunteering opportunities for Woodside staff members.
Department for communities- W.A. Youth Awards Woodside has been long-term sponsors of these awards, which recognise the achievement of West Australian youth in the areas of citizenship, leadership, environment and inspiration.
Earth Science Western Australia Working towards increasing the study of earth science subjects like geography and geophysics in secondary schools in Western Australia. Supporting the development of an Earth Science text book for senior secondary students undertaking the subject at school.
Earthwatch – Woodside TeachLive Woodside TeachLive allows Western Australian school teachers an opportunity to work along side scientists in the field, while teaching live back to their students in the class room. The 2009 program supports Earthwatch’s Whale Sharks of Ningaloo Reef expedition.
Film and Television Institute The “Making Movies Roadshow” aims to encourage people living in regional communities to discover filmmaking as a way of recording and share their stories and culture with a wider audience and future generations. The program delivers hands-on filmmaking workshops, aimed at teaching regional people about digital technology. At the end of the workshop participants have their films shown at an outdoor community screening.
Leeuwin Ocean Adventures This program provides opportunities for young people to develop leadership and teamwork skills, as well as perseverance and dedication. Our sponsorship focuses predominantly our communities of Karratha/Roebourne, Exmouth and Broome. This program has recently been endorsed by the Curriculum Council of Western Australia, which will enable year 10, 11 and 12 students to receive five points towards their Western Australian Certificate of Education.
Marine Discovery West In order to improve understanding of the WA marine environment and promote sustainable behaviour that supports healthy marine ecosystems and sustainable fisheries, Woodside is supporting Marine Discovery West to develop a marine education strategy and Teaching Program for WA schools.
Mission Australia Woodside was involved in the “Catalyst” launch project, commencing in 2008 and managed and created by Mission Australia. This initiative took inspiration from a similar program offered in New York and Sydney. The Catalyst program gives disadvantaged people the opportunity to undertake university accredited humanities units.
National Youth Science Forum By giving year 11 students a chance to test-drive universities and careers in the sciences by giving them practical hands-on experience the National Youth Science Forum is aiming to increase the number of people enrolling in science and engineering courses at university.
Ngala Woodside’s sponsorship of Ngala aims to create an easy transition for parents living in Karratha, or those involved in fly in/fly out routines. Ngala provides parenting assistance to our staff by offering education packages, workshops and family assistance. Ngala will also undertake studies into onsite work practices and environmental impact on workers and the way they approach parenting.
Perth International Arts Festival Western Australia’s premier cultural festival now connects with over 300,000 people each year brings together some of the world’s greatest living artists to a world wide audience. Woodside was the festivals 2009 Indigenous sponsor.
Petroleum Club of Western Australia Woodside are supporting the Western Australian Museum’s Inshore Kimberley Marine Biological Survey. This survey will assist in a fundamental understanding of the ecological value of marine life in the Kimberly. This information can be used in heritage and conservation assessments in the future.
Scitech In 2009, Woodside will continue to support the School Science Awards, expanding its involvement by offering an Aboriginal Education Program and Science After School program. The Aboriginal Education program will provide education opportunities to students in both metro and regional areas via tours and workshops at schools.
The Smith Family The FACT program run by The Smith Family is a coordinated program of capacity building initiatives, targeted at the Roebourne and Karratha area. The program focuses on improving literacy and technological skills in school students, as well as offering mentoring programs to assist disadvantaged youth and their families.
Steamworks “live@Woodside” Starting in 2008, Steamworks with the “Live@Woodside" creates opportunities for emerging Perth performers, while also increasing the visibility of street arts in Perth. The program is aimed at Woodside employees and the local community. For the first time this year, one performance will also be featured in Karratha.
University of Melbourne ATNS project The Agreements, Treaties and Negotiated Settlements Project will undertake a study into the negotiation and agreement making process between Aboriginal people and resource companies. West Australian Aboriginal Dance Company Woodside is supporting the development of professional Aboriginal Dance Company.
West Australian Ballet Woodside is the supporter of the young artist program which allows young ballet dancers with an opportunity to study at a prestigious ballet school, professional training and the chance of performing with professional dancers.
Western Australian Chinese Chamber of Commerce This program aims to assist people in understanding how best to communicate with Chinese people when doing business.
