Health and Safety

The health and safety of our people comes first in all our decisions and actions.

Our goal is “no one gets hurt, no incidents” and we aspire to be recognised, by our people and peers, as an industry leader in the management of health and safety.

To achieve this outcome we pursue three layers of protection to reduce the potential for injuries and incidents:

  • Plant – design, engineering hardware, control systems, physical layouts
  • Process – management systems and process to identify, control and mitigate risks and drive continuous operational improvement
  • People – capability in terms of leadership skills, relevant knowledge and experience, and the organisational culture they create

We believe that injuries and incidents are unacceptable and we are striving to improve our performance by focusing on delivering six health and safety imperatives:

  1. Select and manage principal contractors in line with Woodside values and commitment to deliver outstanding Health and Safety performance
  2. Embed deeply Our Safety Culture
  3. Understand and control Major Accident Events and Major Health Hazards through the asset life cycle
  4. Understand and control occupational health risks
  5. Health and Safety and integrity processes, standards, procedures and rules are understood and applied as intended
  6. Improve learning and communicating lessons from incidents and warning signs to avoid repeat incidents

In the event of an incident occurring, Woodside responds by immediately taking action to prevent escalation and make the site safe. Incidents are reported in a timely manner, classified according to the Woodside Matrix and then investigated to identify root causes. Corrective actions are determined and then implemented to prevent recurrence. Incidents and their learnings are communicated to the workforce and major investigations are reviewed by senior management.

Stand Together for Safety

In February 2009, Woodside Chief Executive Officer Don Voelte hosted a contractor safety forum that brought together over 100 senior leaders from Woodside and 35 of our most significant contractors to focus and realign our efforts on health and safety. As a direct outcome of this event, Woodside and its contractors participated in May 2009 in a two hour safety ‘stand down’ event, called Stand Together for Safety that:

  • Provided an opportunity for people to step away from their jobs and have a structured discussion about how safety can be improved in their area;
  • Provided further opportunities for senior managers to engage with the workforce on safety; and
  • Reinforced to our employees, supervisors, line managers and contractors that safety comes before any other consideration.

At Woodside, 20,000 people, both Woodside and contractor employees, across more than 40 locations participated, reinforcing that we all can contribute to improving our safety performance.

Working in conjunction with APPEA, an invitation was extended to the wider Australian oil and gas industry to participate in this ground breaking event and, despite the short lead time, APPEA estimate 80 per cent of the industry participated in this year's event. There are opportunities to build on the success of this year's Stand Together for Safety and planning has commenced for the 2010 event. It is hoped that Stand Together for Safety will become an annual event and a key feature of the safety landscape in the future.
