Environmental Excellence
Excellence in environmental performance is central to Woodside’s sustainable development as a company.
We operate in diverse and sensitive environments where our activities have the potential to impact on land, water, air and ecosystems. We understand that our licence to operate and licence to grow depend on how well we understand and protect these environments and reduce our environmental footprint.
This approach is reflected in our Management Standard 6, which includes performance requirements that:
- All employees and contractors are accountable for environmental performance within their area of responsibility.
- Environmental accountabilities and competency requirements are defined and documented.
- Environmental objectives and targets are included in business and activity plans and performance is monitored and reported.
- Environment resources required to deliver the objectives are made available.
- Environmental impacts are identified and associated risks are assessed, managed and communicated.
- Environment performance is monitored, assessed, reported and communicated.
- Environmental incidents are reported and investigated as required, and learnings applied.
These management expectations are supported by our Operating Standards on environmental performance. These apply wherever we have operational control and are structured around seven focus areas:
- Atmospheric emissions
- Effluent discharges
- Waste
- Contamination
- Resource consumption
- Environmental impact assessment; and
- Biodiversity
Energy efficiency is a key activity area as we continue to grow our business. We are progressively undertaking energy efficiency assessments of our production facilities, with a view to improving performance and meeting our obligations to government. Four assessments were completed in 2008, details of which are published in our Sustainable Development Report 2008.
