The Browse LNG Development operates under Woodside’s sustainability policies and principles. We aim to provide energy to the world in a way that is sustainable in the long term, to high standards of environmental excellence, and that creates a meaningful social contribution along the way.
Environment
One of the keys to achieving environmental excellence is to understand the environment in which we operate. The Browse LNG Development has invested more than $80 million in environmental studies over many years to provide us with baseline environmental data. This data helps us understand what potential environmental impacts our development may have, and develop best practice approaches to avoiding, mitigating and managing those impacts. The baseline data also provides us with a dataset that we will use to monitor the Browse LNG Development’s ongoing environmental performance.
Woodside is also committed to sharing the vast knowledge we have gathered on the marine and terrestrial environment during our environmental studies.
Community
Woodside is working closely with the Broome and Dampier Peninsula communities to build strong relationships based on trust and respect. Woodside is also investing in the region to build community capacity, develop local opportunities and foster community wellbeing.
Our community relations strategy has three focus areas that are aligned with Woodside’s business strategy:
- Social impacts – providing a consistent and strategic approach to understanding and mitigating negative social impacts and creating positive social impacts;
- Stakeholder engagement – creating stakeholder relationships outside issues-based interactions to support long-term trust; and
- Social investment – a community-based approach to support local people and organisations
Opportunities for Indigenous people
The Browse LNG Development also represents a significant opportunity for Kimberley Indigenous people. Woodside is working closely with Native Title claimants and other Kimberley Indigenous people to help them make the most of the opportunities the Browse LNG Development will bring. In consultation with Traditional Owners, Woodside has committed to a range of education, training and business participation measures for Kimberley Indigenous people that will flow from the Browse Development, that are worth in excess of $A 1billion
