Media Release - Woodside, Clontarf and Fremantle Dockers team up

Students from Clontarf Foundation academies across WA will play off for the Woodside Cup in a curtain-raiser to the AFL game between Fremantle and Brisbane at Patersons Stadium on Saturday, 25 June.

The day before the big game, the students will receive some advice from Fremantle Dockers rising star Stephen Hill during a special training session at Fremantle Oval.  Stephen has been emailing the students in the lead up to the game with tips on healthy eating, fitness and match preparation.

The students will also take part in a careers session, receive advice on nutrition from Fremantle’s Community Goals team and will take a tour of the Fremantle Oval facilities.

Woodside’s support of both the Clontarf Foundation and the Fremantle Dockers has enabled the game and related activities to take place.

Through its Reconciliation Action Plan, Woodside supports a range of education initiatives to help provide opportunities in WA indigenous communities.  Providing support for the Clontarf Foundation is an important part of these efforts.

The Clontarf Foundation exists to improve the education, discipline, self esteem, life skills and employment prospects of young Aboriginal men and, by doing so, equip them to participate more meaningfully in society.

Clontarf Foundation works in partnership with schools.  Using the passion that Aboriginal boys have for football allows Clontarf to attract the boys to school and provide full time support to encourage healthy lifestyles, completion of school and a successful transition to work.

There are now 18 Clontarf academies throughout WA supporting almost 1300 students, as well as another 20 academies in the Northern Territory and Victoria.

The students playing in Saturday’s curtain-raiser have been selected to play based on their attendance at school and demonstrated commitment to their studies.

As a major sponsor of Fremantle, Woodside will also celebrate the occasion by giving out thousands of purple hands to spectators to demonstrate support for the Fremantle Dockers as they take on Brisbane.

Media opportunity:

Fremantle player Stephen Hill will be available to take questions from media before he joins Clontarf students at a training session.
