Pluto gas is naturally low in carbon dioxide (about two per cent), which is less than much of the other gas in the region.
Woodside is investing up to $100 million in a program to offset reservoir emissions from the Pluto gas field. This investment, combined with technology and efficiency measures, will make Pluto one of the most environmentally efficient LNG plants in the world.
The program involves a $25 million investment for mallee tree plantings in 2008 and 2009 with an option to undertake additional plantings for another three consecutive years.
The Pluto LNG Project involves the largest marine monitoring program of its kind in the world. The program aims to minimise our impact on marine life resulting from dredging activities in Mermaid Sound. Woodside has also committed to offset the project’s impact to the marine environment through a biodiversity offsets program.
Woodside was granted two separate environmental approvals for the development of the Pluto LNG Project from the Western Australian and Commonwealth governments in late 2007.
