Gigas 2D Pilot Ocean-Bottom-Cable Marine Seismic Survey
Woodside, as part of its appraisal studies for the Browse LNG Development, is about to undertake a
two-dimensional (2D) pilot ocean-bottom-cable (OBC) marine seismic survey, known as Gigas.
The survey was referred to the Commonwealth Department of Environment, Water, Heritage and the Arts (DEWHA) for approval under the Environmental Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (EPBC Act). The DEWHA decided the survey would not be a controlled action if carried out in a particular manner.
An Environment Plan was submitted to and accepted by the Western Australian Department of Industry and Resources (DoIR) in accordance with the requirements of the Petroleum (Submerged Lands) (Management of Environment) Regulations Act (1999). A summary of this document is available for download below.
The survey, planned to commence in April 2008, will be undertaken in Commonwealth waters over the north Scott Reef lagoon, located in the Browse Basin, approximately 430km north of Broome in Western Australia. It will consist of six separate seismic lines (of about 113 line kilometres in total length) and take about 30 days to complete.
The Gigas survey will test the suitability of the OBC technique for seismic acquisition and will provide some additional 2D seismic data over this portion of the Torosa gas field.
Further seismic surveys in the area may be required by Woodside at a later date.
